SUPERFLEX: This Is The Tip Of The Iceberg, 2019

An expansion of the University of South Florida College of The Arts’ Contemporary Art Museum, GENERATOR is an incubator of new ideas and a place for expanded artistic experimentation. Primarily focused on the moving image and time-based contemporary art, the USF Contemporary Art Museum has reconceived a 3,100 square-foot renovated industrial space at The Factory in St. Petersburg as a dedicated home for exhibitions, public programs, and special projects that cultivate and expand audience engagement and foster public exchange. In partnership with USF St. Petersburg and the City of St. Petersburg and supported by The Factory, Behar + Peteranecz architecture firm, and the St. Petersburg Downtown Partnership, GENERATOR offers a new cultural dimension to the St. Petersburg arts district that contributes to the city’s prominence as an arts destination while offering free public access to an inclusive space for creative exploration, research, and experimentation.

GENERATOR: USF Contemporary Art Museum builds upon the museum’s distinguished history of innovative and bold programming, while shining a light on scores of untold stories and emerging voices as relayed principally through digital media, film, and advanced visualization technologies and platforms. Projects will focus on issues of equity and justice while using the unique perspective of artists to illuminate diverse knowledge, excluded histories, and practices for future resiliency in an uncertain time; additionally, programming will be inspired by an expanded understanding of our contemporary climate that highlights local and global environmental, social, and political concerns.

GENERATOR’s inaugural exhibition SUPERFLEX: This Is The Tip Of The Iceberg, scheduled for early 2023, features film installations and sculptural works that showcase SUPERFLEX’s long engagement with climate change, interspecies living, and structures of power. The two-channel film Beyond The End of The World (2021) and the viewer responsive film installation Vertical Migration (2021) transform the gallery space into an arena of submersion where the sea invades terrestrial spaces. The films depict scenarios in which both natural and human environments are transformed, and destruction and decay lead to unpredictable new beginnings. SUPERFLEX: This Is The Tip Of The Iceberg proposes new strategies for future resilience through global, interspecies perspectives while suggesting that the impacts of climate change are just beginning. SUPERFLEX: This Is The Tip Of The Iceberg is co-curated by Sarah Howard and Christian Viveros-Fauné and organized by USFCAM.
