April 3 to May 1, 2004 About the Juror: Allan McCollum Allan McCollum is an internationally recognized artist, who lives and works in New York and is the guest artist for the school of Art & Art History during the Spring 2004 semester. Allan McCollum was born in Los Angeles, California, in 1944, and now lives and works in New York City. Since the 1970s McCollum has examined the circulation of art, the definition of objects as art, and how society creates and values objects. Plaster Surrogates from 1982-90, is a vast collection of individually cast sculptures that represent paintings as signs within systems of presentation and value, making viewers conscious of their own acts of viewing and desiring pictures. Considering our relationship to objects, not just to artworks, McCollum has created additional works that juxtapose and investigate the uniqueness of objects in our age of mass production. In his serial works, individual qualities are reduced so that the objects become both unique and universal signs. Allan McCollum is currently represented by the Friedrich Petzel Gallery, New York, and exhibits at the Susan Inglett Gallery, New York. To learn more about Allan McCollum, please visit his website. Director’s Statement The Annual USF Juried Student Art Exhibition is an opportunity for students to have their artwork reviewed by an arts expert from outside of the University and to see it displayed in a museum environment. The University and Tampa Bay community can see emerging talent nurtured by the faculty of the School of Art and Art History. Each spring, the juror — an artist, critic, or gallery/museum professional — selects the exhibition from the artworks submitted by undergraduate and graduate students, and designates the awards. Over the past 28 years we have been fortunate to have our students’ artwork reviewed by many distinguished jurors, including: Marcia Tucker, Roberta Smith, The Guerilla Girls, The Art Guys, Jerry Saltz, and last year by Elyse Goldberg, one of the directors of the James Cohan Gallery in New York. This year's juror is Allan McCollum, an acclaimed artist from New York. Allan McCollum has been 'artist in residence' for the semester and has completed a new project at Graphicstudio. Allan carefully reviewed more than 160 submissions and selected this impressive show representing diverse media and ideas. Viewers will see a resurgence of strength particularly in painting and photography. I extend my appreciation and thanks to Allan McCollum for his careful evaluation of our students' ideas and their commitment to professionalism. Thanks to the Contemporary Art Museum staff, who once again have succeeded in organizing a strong student show. Alexa Favata orchestrated the entire process and arranged for the juror; Don Fuller worked with student interns Josh Bertrand and Dave Rau on the design of the invitation, banners and brochure; Tony Palms and his staff — James Rodger, Larry Mize, I Made Jodog, Hector del Campo, Devon Larsen, Beth Hudson and Nathan Shafer designed and installed the show; Stephen Marcinowski and Randall West managed promotion and marketing; and Mandy Kalajian arranged for the reception. James Rodger and Devon Larsen are recognized for their coordination of the entries and assisting the juror, and Brinson Thieme, our student intern, went beyond our usual expectations in her handling of the logistics of preparing the show. Each year, a group of loyal friends from the community along with the faculty of the College of The Arts, the School of Art and Art History, and Graphicstudio, join the CAM in supporting the students by contributing monetary awards. We are very appreciative of this support, as it adds to the vitality and excitement of the exhibition. Please note the names of the generous contributors listed in this brochure. Margaret Miller School Director's Statement CONGRATULATIONS to the students included in the 28th Annual USF Student Art Exhibition. Your imagination, critical thinking and hard work reflect positively on all of us in the School of Art and Art History and the University. This is a terrific exhibition! To those students not included in the exhibit: take heart – your efforts are no less worthy than the exhibitors. Juried exhibitions, by their nature, reflect the values, ideas and vision of the juror. Another juror, another year – and surely other responses to your artworks. Keep the faith! Thanks to the Director and talented staff of the Museum as well as the students who have worked on this exhibition. Also thanks to the faculty and private citizens who have provided support and awards for our students and this exhibition. Your belief in our mission is significantly encouraging. A very special thanks to the juror this year, Allan McCollum, who spent countless hours reviewing the submitted artworks, meeting with our students and providing an insightful lecture about his current project at Graphicstudio. Allan is also our School's Artist in Residence this semester. I am always struck by how fortunate we all are to be so thoroughly engaged in the best of both worlds: learning and art.
